Thiruvananthapuram, May 18 (PTI) An Italian delegation led by Staffan De Mistura, under secretary in the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Italy, met the two marines lodged at the Poojappura Central Prison in connection with the Enrica Lexie case.
Their meeting with the naval guards- Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone who shot at two Keralite fishermen from the Italian ship Enrica Lexie, lasted for an hour.
The two marines are charged with murder in the case.
Mistura told media persons that the delay in shifting the marines from the Central Prison was sad.
"This new delay, yet another, by the authorities of Kerala has let us down. I must say that once again the reason for this is an election: last one was on March 17 at Piravom and now June 2 in Neyyattinkara," he said.
-------------------------------------------------------------- Four ex-CPM activists attacked
Thrissur, May 18 (PTI) Four CPM rebels, including a panchayat member, were stabbed by a group of suspected CPM activists at Meppadam near Chelakkara on Wednesday midnight.
Mohammed Rafeeq, Chelakkara panchayat member, has been admitted to a private hospital here while Faisal, Suresh and his mother Sukumari, have been admitted to a private hospital in Chelakkara, police said.
Rafeeq had quit the CPM two years ago following differences with party leadership and moved over to the Muslim League.
Faisal and Suresh also left CPM along with Rafeeq to join the League.
Police said the men were in the house of Sukumari, a one-time CPM activist, when a group barged in and attacked them with swords.
-------------------------------------------------------------- 16 candidates in fray for Neyyattinkara bypoll
Thiruvananthapuram, May 18 (PTI) A total of 16 candidates including a woman are in the fray after the scrutiny of nominations for the Neyyattinkara assembly by-election scheduled for June 2.
The main contest is between R Selavaraj of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and F Lawrence of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader O Rajagopal is also in the field, giving a sort of triangular dimension to the electoral battle in the southernmost constituency of Kerala.
The by-election is caused by resignation of the assembly membership by Selvaraj, who won the seat on CPI(M) ticket last year.
After stunning the CPI(M) by resigning his assembly seat and party membership, Selvaraj joined the Congress and is back in the fray as the UDF candidate.
Of the 16 in the fray, independent candidate Laila Sundaresan is the lone woman.
