After innumerable predictions of who would play the inimitable ‘Silk’ Smitha, it has now officially been announced that sexy Sana Khan is the actress who would be debuting in Malayalam films by playing Smitha’s role in the film Profile. Mumabi-born Sana has starred in a couple of Hindi films and came into the limelight by debuting as heroine in Tamil films opposite Simbu in the successful Silambattam in 2008.
She then went on to star in Telugu and Kannada movies. Signing up a Malayalam film now makes her a ‘typical’ South Indian actress as she would have starred in all the four languages in the southern part of the country by the time the film is wrapped up. Readers might recall that Vidya Balan won the national award for ‘best actress’ for her portrayal of Smitha in The Dirrty Picture (TDP) early this year.
Antony Eastman, who incidentally introduced Smitha in Malayalam films more than a couple of decades back, would be the script-writer of Profile. He was at pains to insist that the film won’t be a remake of TDP. “It’s not a remake and the question of Sana repeating Vidya’s role doesn’t arise at all,” says Anil, the director of Profile.
Anil describes the late Smitha as an actress who was courageous and who never felt scared to speak out her mind. “It’d be a true story of ‘Silk’ Smitha and we intend to make in as realistic manner as possible,” concludes Anil.
