The long wait is over. Karthi-starrer Saguni has finally arrived in theatres. The movie that has the cracking combination of Karthi and Santhanam has hit the screens amidst great expectations.
Debutant director Shankar Dayal
has marketed the film well. Films hyped beyond a point tend to fall
flat more often than not and let us see how Saguni has fared.
Storyline:
Kamalakkannan alias Kamal (Karthi) comes
to Chennai from Karaikkudi to meet some powerful persons to save his
house from getting demolished as part of creating a new railway track in
the area. This is his ancestral house and a center for charity
activities. Hence the family wants to save the house at any cost.
Kamalakkannan
tries to meet someone in the corridors of power to help him. He has
spent a lot of money and energy in his efforts to see the right person
to save the house. He is ditched by everyone and stands on the road with
empty hands.
At this point he meets Auto Rickshaw driver Rajini Appadurai (Santhanam), who thinks that he is a man with lot of money. Rajini helps Kamal but soon finds that he is empty.
Kamalakkannan talks to his father over phone about his failed attempts. His father asks him to meet the Chief Minister Boopathy (Prakashraj), who is his friend.
Unfortunately,
the Boopathy is a scandalous schemer. He came to power by trapping his
predecessor through an MMS sex scandal. Unaware of the nature of
Boopathy, Kamal meets him with all hopes. The response from Boopathy
shatters his dreams and hopes.
Unwilling to give up, Kamal decides to play the same political game against CM. He helps a local don Ramani Akka (Radhika), a godman on platform (Nassar) and opposition party leader Perumal (Kota Srinivasa Rao)
to reach new heights in their respective lives. Karthi’s shrewd ways
fetches amazing results. Then he uses these persons to get his goal
achieved.
Watch the movie to know how he dethrones the CM tactically and achieves his goal.
Script Analysis:
Newcomer
Shankar Dayal has chosen a story that has potential to be made a
political thriller. He has also chosen the right cast. He has spiced up
the screenplay with abundance of fun. The movie does moves ahead in a
fast pace.
However, despite all these things the movie fails to make a strong impact, as the script lacks credibility and logic.
However, despite all these things the movie fails to make a strong impact, as the script lacks credibility and logic.
Everyone
except the CM says yes to Kamal and his ways. No one questions his
talent, experience, and motives. His successes too come as a magic
rather than as the result of concerted efforts. His persuasion of the
godman to get in to another league has been convincingly depicted but
his methods with Ramani Akka and Perumal leave much to be desired. He
plays a very serious political game but the entire thing is atrociously
portrayed in a kiddish manner.
Even
the way Prakashraj’s tricks to trap the CM in an SMS sex scandal is far
from convincing. Karthi’s long flashback narrated to Santhanam tries the
patience of the viewers.
The comical
element added by Santhanam and Karthi does make the film watchable. The
combination rocks. The naming of them after Kamal and Rajini and the
resultant affect is rather hilarious.
Cast and Crew Analysis
Karthi
is at home in a role that suits him well. He shows his acting talents
and flair for comedy as well. He is able to change the way he looks
according to the need of the scene with ease.
Pretty Pranitha has no job other than showing her beautiful legs and alluring smile in a few scenes including the songs.
Karthi and Santhanam have done it again after Siruthai. The chemistry between them is awesome. They make the audiences happy.
Nasser’s essaying of a modern godman is enjoyable. Radhika renders a credible performance as a don and politician. Prakashraj gets another routine role and does justice to it.
G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music is among the big disappointments of the film. The only song that stays in the mind is Kantha Karavadai.
Positive Points:
Negative Points:
Lack of credibility, lack of seriousness in handling a serious political theme, and shoddy music.
Verdict:
Despite
having a good knot and some fun element, Saguni fails to make any
impact just because of its weak script that takes everything for
granted.
